Why Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2026 Signals a New Era for ASEAN’s Auto Industry

Malaysia is no longer just part of the region’s automotive story—it’s helping to write it. Something is shifting in ASEAN’s automotive industry. And if you wanted to feel that shift firsthand, Automechanika Kuala Lumpur (AMKL) 2026 was the place to be.

The 15th edition of this premier trade event kicked off today at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, drawing over 317 exhibitors from 16 countries and regions across six halls. But this wasn’t just another trade show. With supply chains regionalising, electrification accelerating, and the aftermarket growing more complex, AMKL has evolved into a strategic platform where Southeast Asia’s mobility future is being actively shaped.

More Than an Exhibition—A Strategic Hub

Officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Haji Hasbi bin Haji Habibollah, Deputy Minister of Transport Malaysia, this year’s theme—creating business synergies where automotive mobility solutions meet OEMs and the aftermarket—reflects a deliberate response to how the industry is changing. The Minister’s presence also underscored the government’s commitment to accelerating Malaysia’s EV infrastructure and future transport agenda.

Structured around Sourcing, Entertainment, and Training, this edition marked a clear shift from transactional showcases to integrated, cross-border partnerships. And the timing couldn’t be more critical: Malaysia recently overtook Indonesia to become ASEAN’s leading car market in the first half of 2025, with Perodua and Proton accounting for 63% of total sales.

“Malaysia is no longer just participating in ASEAN’s automotive growth story—it is increasingly helping to write it,” said Ms Fiona Chiew, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, the organisers of AMKL.
“Automechanika Kuala Lumpur has transformed from a transactional trade fair into a strategic platform where partnerships across sectors and borders are formed.”

What Was on the Show Floor?

Big names like Brembo, Kovax, Schmaco, Vanli, Launch, TUHU Car Care, TecAlliance, and Leoch Battery were among the exhibitors showcasing mobility solutions spanning digital and green energy sectors.

The Automotive Mobility Solutions Zone wasn’t just a display—it was a statement. Electrification, green mobility investment, intelligent manufacturing, and digital supply chains took centre stage. The message was clear: the EV and digitalisation wave is no longer on the horizon. It’s already reshaping how vehicles are made, serviced, and sold across the region.

Learning, Networking, and Hands-On Skills

The Automotive Mobility Solutions Conference brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and tech experts to discuss everything from EVs and autonomous vehicles to ESG compliance and AI integration. It wasn’t just theory—it was a practical forum for businesses to access actionable insights and forge cross-sector connections.

Meanwhile, the Automotive Service Marketplace highlighted a fast-transforming aftermarket sector. Detailing specialists, body shops, chain workshops, and e-commerce providers all met under one roof. And with demand for EV and hybrid servicing skills outpacing supply, the Collision Repair Training Workshop offered live demonstrations to help close that skills gap.

Business Meets Car Culture

It wasn’t all serious. The autoFEST@KL rounded things out with a music party, classic and JDM car displays, motorsports and esports competitions, the EMMA Malaysia Car Audio & Modification Competition, and even an Outdoor, Camping and Caravan Zone.

Because let’s be honest—car culture and business belong together.

Why This Matters for Malaysia

For Malaysian businesses, the opportunity is real. As the aftermarket sector faces a widening skills gap and global partners look for regional footholds, events like AMKL translate directly into partnerships, contracts, and long-term capabilities.

“Fifteen editions in, Automechanika Kuala Lumpur has evolved from a reflection of where the industry stands into a glimpse of where it is going,” Ms Fiona Chiew added.
“The conversations happening here—between global manufacturers, local players, policymakers, and emerging technology providers—are the ones that will define ASEAN’s mobility landscape for the decade ahead.”

As ASEAN accelerates its shift toward electrification and smarter mobility, Malaysia is emerging not just as a participant, but as the convening ground for the region’s next phase of automotive growth.
