A Century in the Making: 1926 Heritage Hotel Reopens in Penang

There’s a new—or rather, very old—story unfolding on Jalan Burma. After first opening its doors a century ago, 1926 Heritage Hotel has been beautifully restored and relaunched as part of The Unlimited Collection by The Ascott Limited.

Originally built in 1926 as British administrative residences, this property has lived many lives. Now, after a thoughtful century-long restoration, it re-emerges as a living chapter of Penang’s history—where colonial architecture meets modern comfort.

A Walk Through Time

From the moment you approach its clean white and beige façade, the hotel’s Anglo-Malay architectural roots are unmistakable. At the entrance, keep an eye out for its emblem: a palm tree flanked by two panthers. It’s not just a logo—it’s a sign that you’ve arrived home.

“As travel is increasingly shaped by culture and experience, we are seeing growing demand for destinations with a strong sense of identity,” said Mondi Mecja, Country General Manager of Ascott Malaysia. “Marking its centennial, 1926 Heritage Hotel has been carefully revitalised with respect for its original character, ensuring it remains part of Penang’s heritage for generations to come.”

Inside the Revival

Step through the main double doors and you’ll find yourself in the central bungalow, now the reception area. A striking art wall featuring French-inspired straw marquetry tells the same tale of palm trees and panthers. Every corner here feels less like a nod to the past and more like a respectful continuation of it.

For those who want space to spread out, the Straits Suite offers a separate bedroom, living area, and study—complete with plush bedding and premium bath essentials.

If you prefer something more grounded, the 52 sqm Heritage Garden Patio Room opens onto a private outdoor garden with direct pool access. It’s ideal for travellers seeking quiet and a closer connection to nature.

More Than Just a Room

Beyond the bedrooms, 1926 Heritage Hotel is designed for both leisure and business travellers.

  • Work & Wellness: Two sunlit meeting rooms (Burma Room and Heritage Hall), a modern gym, and the Asian-inspired Sensorium Spa.

  • Relaxation: An outdoor pool framed by tropical greenery, plus a central courtyard garden that feels like a hidden oasis in the city.

Taste of George Town

Food is a highlight here. The Chinese bistro Root House by Gēn is helmed by chef-founder Johnson Wong, whose Penang restaurant Gēn recently re-entered Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026. The menu draws on local ingredients and diaspora influences—telling the story of how flavours travel, adapt, and evolve.

Pair your meal with a drink at U-Bar, a relaxed long bar perfect for unwinding.

For all-day dining, The Heritage Collection by Daily Coffee serves up local favourites and familiar classics from breakfast through dinner. And don’t miss U-Shop, a curated space featuring artisanal products from across Penang.

Live the Neighbourhood

True to The Unlimited Collection’s philosophy, this hotel isn’t just a place to sleep—it’s a gateway to Penang’s living culture. From Nagore Square and Lorong Burma’s heritage temples to the creative heartbeat of Hin Bus Depot, everything is just steps from your door.

Opening Promotion – Book Now

Here’s the best part. From now until 31 July 2026, you can book a Heritage Room for just RM428++ per room per night, including complimentary daily breakfast for two.

Whether you’re a history lover, a culture seeker, or just in need of a thoughtful getaway, 1926 Heritage Hotel invites you to be part of its next century.

Malaysia Heavy Construction Equipment Owners’ Association (MHCEOA): New Tax Policy must have a transition mechanism.

Leong Foo Yew, President of the Malaysia Heavy Construction Equipment Owners Association (MHCEOA), has called on the government to provide reasonable buffer periods and support measures for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) during the implementation of the e-invoice system and the Sales and Service Tax (SST). This appeal aims to alleviate the dual operational pressures faced by businesses and prevent inflationary effects in the construction sector from being passed on to consumers. The MHCEOA recently held a luncheon to celebrate its 33rd anniversary, during which the 16th term (2025–2028) council members were sworn in. In his speech, Leong highlighted that the industry is currently grappling with administrative and financial challenges due to the simultaneous rollout of e-invoicing and SST. He noted that these additional compliance burdens come at a time when SMEs are already struggling with rising labor costs, wage pressures, and regulatory expenses—pushing many into even...
