In a landmark step towards a greener Malaysia, ATLAS Vending, the vending machine arm of Etika Sdn Bhd, and the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SW Corp) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at SW Corp’s headquarters in Cyberjaya. This public-private partnership unites two national leaders in a shared mission to scale up recycling infrastructure, embed sustainable habits into daily life, and make green living more accessible. Under the agreement, SW Corp will adopt 50 ECOPODs—the Guinness World Records-recognised reverse vending machine (RVM) hailed as the world’s thinnest with a can compaction system. These units will be deployed at strategic, high-footfall locations identified by SW Corp, such as wet markets, hospitals, and universities.
The ECOPOD’s sleek, space-saving design allows it to fit seamlessly into these often congested environments, making recycling convenient without adding to space concerns. Unlike conventional machines, ECOPOD combines a recycling unit and a vending machine in one slim footprint. Despite its compact build, each unit can hold up to 214 crushed cans and 70 bottles per cycle. Designed for simplicity, users need only their mobile number to start recycling and redeem credits, especially when recycling Etika products, which are instantly rewarded with credits for discounted drinks from an adjacent ATLAS vending machine.
Santharuban T. Sundaram, CEO of Etika Sdn Bhd, stated that this collaboration is a crucial step in advancing Malaysia’s circular economy by making it easier for people to turn everyday consumption into a sustainable act. Similarly, Ybrs. Tuan Khalid Bin Mohamed, CEO of SW CORP, emphasised that the partnership is a model of smart collaboration to strengthen Malaysia’s recycling ecosystem and provide an interactive platform for communities, especially the younger generation, to support the nation’s sustainability goals. As a locally designed and built "Buatan Malaysia" innovation, ECOPOD demonstrates how homegrown solutions can tackle global challenges. This collaboration strengthens Malaysia’s Plastics Sustainability Roadmap 2021-2030 and, since its launch, has captured significant public and corporate interest, setting a new benchmark for space-efficient recycling and reflecting a collective determination to accelerate sustainability through innovation and partnership.
